Please Clean Your Refridgerator

08.22.08 (10:52 am)   [edit]

A few of my friends are moving back into college around this time, and I like to try to give them a hand whenever I can.  However, there are certain times that I refuse to help.  The only time I ever refuse is if the person is a complete slob.  I have a couple of guy friends who are borderline animal they are so messy.  Last year, I helped my friend Jake move into his apartment.  He's a great guy, but very messy.  I did not know how messy until I helped move him in.

We got to his apartment and his 2 friends helped him carry all the heavy things in like the fridge, bed, dressers etc.  I was going along to help with the organization and "interior decorating"...which is almost laughable.  After we got everything moved in...when your apartment is supposed to be at it's cleanest...his apartment was still truly disgusting.

First off, the inside of his refridgerador was covered in mold and fungus.  Fungus removal and mold removal are beyond my concern, I'll leave that up to Jake.  His bedding wasn't washed, his clothes weren't folded or hung, his shoes smelled, his couch had cigarette burns and spills all over it.  I don't know if it's just me, but how do some guys live like this?  Maybe I'm being too hard on 'em, but its gross!

Solar Power

08.20.08 (9:20 am)   [edit]

My recent interest has been solar power. I remember being young and having teachers in school and friend talk about "solar powered" as a thing of the distant future. Well, that future is upon us. I was cruising around the internet and saw everything from solar iPod chargers and solar cell phone chargers to lights that don't need batteries or electricity.

This kind of technology still kind of blows my mind, but it would be amazing if this caught on to all aspects of our life. Could you imagine a car without a battery or remote controls and other day to day electronics with a black strip that replaces the batteries? I know buying batteries is a pain for me personally...they are one of those things that you hate to spend money on.

I am looking forward to the day where cell phone chargers, batteries, extension cords and power outlets are a thing of the past.  As for right now, I am going to do my best to learn more on this technology and maybe invest in a few solar items.  A solar powered light sounds like a good start.

Cleansing

08.15.08 (11:42 am)   [edit]

I read a pretty interesting article the other day on one of those online wacky news sites about self cleanses. I am really interested in weight loss, even though I am in pretty good shape. I try to work out and eat healthy as much as possible, but I'm far from a health nut. Anyways, this article was all about body cleansing and I have to be honest, it really got my attention.

The first kind of cleanser was a colon cleanser.  While it seems pretty insane and the title doesn't help too much, there are people who rave about this.  In essence, it is a full body cleanse than gets all this junk that builds up in your intestines out of you.  It is kind of like a super laxative.  The article also had testimonials from athletes, one was a mixed martial artist I believe.

He said he follows a strict raw food, non cooked diet and uses different colon cleansers and cleansing techniques to give him more energy and feel healthier.  I suppose if someone who competed at an athletic level that highly used it and raved about it, I should trust it.  Maybe sometime down the road I'll give this a try just to see what the fuss is about.

My Future House

08.13.08 (9:33 am)   [edit]

My 2 uncles are both Ohio home builders , so I was talking to them about my dream house.  Ever since I've been little, I always thought about what my dream house would be.  We grew up in a small house, and I was always jealous of my friends' big basements.  That is probably the most important thing about my future dream house:  not the kitchen, not a big bathroom, not an impressive master bedroom...I want a big finished basement.  Hopefully if I have children one day, I want them to have a place where they could spend time with their friends and not be confined.

My uncles said that they took a trip to Texas with their crew for some work on 2 Texas custom homes , and they were talking about their finished basements.  The one basement, my uncle said, was like a replica of their first floor with the same amount of rooms.  There was the main area that had a big screen TV on the wall with a sectional couch and a really nice bar off of the wall.  There was a separate room coming off of this room that had a pool table and ping pong table in it with some seating and a bathroom.  Just listening to him describe this basement made me 100% positive that this is what I wanted.

Hopefully I can get a well paying job and marry a good guy so I can make this happen!

Buying New Underwear: Gradual Process or Total Change?

08.12.08 (12:38 pm)   [edit]

This may seem like a pretty minor point, but I am genuinely curious how you girls (and even guys) go about this. I've done the gradual underwear accumulation, and I've done the underwear bulk buys and I'm not too sure which is better.  Do I take a day and a good amount of money and buy a lot of new bras and panties ?  Do I buy a small amount every month? Here is a pros and cons list that I've made up for both methods.

Bulk Buying

Pros:

-you can take $300 and buy all the underwear you'll need for the next year or two at least

-you can take advantage of store sales or online sales like Hue panties.

-you can cross one thing off of your list for the near future

-you can put a bonus check or extra money towards it

-you can throw out all of the underwear you don't wear or is damages at once, clearing out a ton of room

Cons:

-it can be a big expense all at once if you have a tight budget

-you may not be able to get the variety you're looking for

-you may over buy

Gradually Buying:

Pros:

-you don't need a lot of money at once

-you know exactly what you need

-you can make a quick and easy shopping trip

-you can concentrate on variety and style, not price

Cons:

-you can't take full advantage of sales

-you'll have to fit new underwear in an already full collection

-you'll have to constantly update your collection

Think about it and let me know what you think!

Arts And Crafts Idea

08.08.08 (8:54 am)   [edit]

I have a friend who is a big fan of chewing tobacco. While I personally don't like him doing it all that much, I am mature enough to know that people can make their own decisions. He is a good friend of mine and I trust he can run his own life. Nevertheless, something good did come out of his nasty habit.

The kind of tobacco he likes comes in a small, rectangular tin with rounded edges. After seeing him throw a number of these out, I couldn't help but think that it was a waste. I am very creative when it comes to arts and crafts and recycling things, so I told him to give him empty tins to me instead of throwing them out.  The tin doesn't have any labels on it or anything...just painted metal.  I immediately thought that it would be easy to spray paint these and reuse them.

I collected about 4 of the empty tins off of my friend Alex in about a 2 week span.  I went to the arts and crafts store by my house and picked up some spray paint, glitter and other miscellaneous art items.  Time to go to work.  I immediately painted two of these cans pink.  I painted the top and bottom separately so they wouldn't stick when closed.  After I painted them, I put some silver glitter on the tin before the paint was wet.  I painted the other one orange and put gold glitter on it.

After the paint and glitter was done, I hand painted my mom's name on one, my other friend Brianne's name on one and my name on one.  I gave them to those 2 as presents, and they loved them!  My mom put a little cushion in the bottom and keeps some of her earring in it now.  Brianne has hers at work to collect spare change.  They both said they have received many compliments on their unique gifts.

I painted the last tin black and put a red skull on it and Alex's name in Old English font.  I gave it back to him and he was really impressed.  I guess if you can't beat 'em, join 'em!

Decorating My Room

08.07.08 (10:24 am)   [edit]

My room has been getting a little stale lately, so I decided to use my disposable income to invest in some decor.  After much interior decorating deliberation, I decided that I wanted to have a pretty dominant central theme.  I didn't want my room to look like I just threw it together...like it was a dorm room.  I decided on my favorite animal print, zebra!

It was pretty easy to get my hands on a lot of fairly inexpensive zebra print interior decor.  First, I got a terrific black and zebra striped comforter to go with black sheets and pillowcases and my black wooden frame bed.  I have hardwood floors, so I got a matching zebra area rug to put next to my bed.  The two big changes were done!

My walls and ceiling are white, so luckily I didn't have to paint them.  I did get a terrific poster of a model wearing a zebra print dress online.  I framed it and put it on the white wall...it looks amazing!  In addition, the one expensive item I did buy was a small zebra fabric bench.  This piece matched with the rug and comforter pulls the entire room together!

Early Halloween Costume Idea

08.06.08 (6:53 am)   [edit]

So I know it's August, but it's never too early to start thinking about Halloween!  I am a girl who really enjoys Halloween...when else can you take on another personality for a night or two?  Anyways, I've narrowed my famous Halloween costumes to threee finalists.  Here they are, and let me know what you think.

Zombie:

I always thought this would be a really cool idea.  I was thinking of wearing somewhat of a semi-formal outfit and zombi-ing it out.  I was going to get an old dress and wear tights or sheers under it with some old jewelry and heels.  Then the twist...I'll smear the dress and my face and arms with dirt, put holes in the tights and maybe even wear only one heel.  Give myself a pretty horrifying makeup job with dark circles under my eyes and whatnot.  This sounds like an awesome costume if everything comes together correctly!

Retro Cheerleader:

I really like cheerleading, and I love the fashion of the old cheerleaders.  This one involves some research, but nothing I couldn't handle.  I'd see if I could get my hands on a real retro cheerleading uniform and some knee high socks.  I'd put my hair in pig tails or something retro looking, and get a megaphone and maybe some flash cards.  This could be a terrific Halloween costume, and would be 10 times better than the overdone "sexy cheerleader".

Old Lady:

I'm not too much of a fan of Halloween being a day that girls can dress "slutty", so this would be a great ironic costume to make a bit of a statement.  I'd want to look very grandmotherish, with the short, curly gray hair and dignified dress or pant-suit.  The makeup and hair would be tricky, but I'm pretty sure I could nail the outfit.  I think people would like this costume...girls would find it pretty refreshing.  Guys might not be too fond of it though!

Boxers Or Briefs?

07.30.08 (1:39 pm)   [edit]

Although I wrote my last article on my choice of underwear, I probably think about guy's underwear just as much.  I have some pretty strong opinions about what guys wears under his jeans and shorts.  Much like women's undergarments, I think guys should treat their underwear like a part of their overall outfit (even if nobody sees it).  Here are some likes and dislikes about guys underwear.

Like - Boxer briefs

Boxer briefs are the ideal type of underwear for pretty much every adult male.  They are stretchier and more comfortable, and allow for more support.  In addition, if you are a guy who works, they are really flattering for your physique.  From what I've seen, they are also slightly cheaper than regular boxers.

Dislike - Briefs

Briefs are done.  They are for little boys and grandpas.  I equate male briefs to women's one piece bathing suits.  You have to have a perfect body to look good in both.  If you have any kind of bad spots, the briefs will highlight them and make you look bad.  Stay away from the "tighty whiteys".

Like - Solid, striped or subtly patterned boxers

When it comes to guy's underwear, the simpler the better.  I don't think your boxers should be loud or flamboyant.  A simple pair of solid color boxers, striped boxers or patterned boxers look terrific and can go with many outfits.  There are some great examples of this at the Roca Wear site under the Roca Wear sleep wear page.

Dislike - Humor or cartoon boxers

Nothing makes me think "dumb frat boy" like if a guy is wearing immature boxers with corny sexual innuendo (conveniently placed pockets as well).  If it was up to me, Joe Boxer brand boxers would be outlawed.  Also guys, it doesn't impress a girl when you're wearing Simpson's or Family Guy boxers either.  They're good shows, we get it, but what would you think if we wore Seinfeld bras?

Like - When boxers are worn low on the waist

When you wear your boxers lower on your waist, it elongates your midsection making you look slimmer.  Guys who are in shape can pull this look of very well.  I would imagine they are more comfortable slung a little lower than right on your waist as well.  It also helps avoid my next point.

Dislike - When you can see boxers above your pants

The 90s are over, and so is this awful trend.  I don't want to see 5 inches of your underwear no matter if you're wearing loose jeans or girl jeans.  It is very unattractive when the back pockets of your jeans are below your butt and we can practically see your entire boxer.  It looks unkempt and childish.

Why Do We Spend So Much Money On Underwear?

07.28.08 (11:36 am)   [edit]

I always thought it was funny how girls spend so much money on underwear.  I am not preaching, because I'm guilty of it too.  It is kind of ironic that we'll spend $50 on a bra that nobody will really see.  I try as much as anyone else to get a good deal on underwear whenever I can, but it seems like I am drawn to expensive undergarments.

I've had some success with Hue panties , they are fairly inexpensive and so cute!  Panties are never the problem though, I can usually find good deals on them.  I have yet to find a consistent place to buy bras and not go broke though.  Whenever I buy cheap bras, it shows.  They always look unflattering and usually wear quickly.  I guess you get what you pay for.  It's too bad that they don't make Hue bras that match the Hue panties !

Cold Weather Attire

07.24.08 (11:15 am)   [edit]

A friend of mine's biggest pet peeve in the world is when girls where sheers under a skirt.  I was wearing a pair of hue sheers last weekend when we all went out for a nice dinner because it is always cold in that particular restaurant.  She kind of looked at me funny and asked why I was wearing them in the middle of summer.  I'm one of those girls who gets cold pretty easily, and apparently she is the opposite.

Anyways, she said something like "well why didn't you wear long pants then"?  I told her that it was summer and I liked to wear skirts, even if it was a little chilly.  The hue sheers keep my legs surprisingly warm when it's only a little chilly.  When I told her this, she looked at me like I had two heads.  She said "well I'd just wear long pants then".

I think it's perfectly acceptable to wear sheers when it's cold out.  Ideally, I'd like to wear a skirt bare legged in the summer because I get a nice tan and work out and they look good.  What do you guys think?  Do you go with the sheers and skirt when its a little nippy or do you go right for the jeans?

Age And Branding

07.22.08 (6:37 am)   [edit]

Myself and a girlfriend of mine had a conversation about fashion the other day.  As you can see by reading most of my blog entries, I am very fashion oriented.  I'm not one of those girls who wear really outlandish things to get attention like I'm on Sex And The City, but I do appreciate clothing.  Anyway, we had a talk about age and branding.  We both found it kind of ironic how so much attention is payed to branding by teenagers and high school students, yet it kind of dissipates as you get older.

I remember being in high school and every girl needed the latest Rocawear purse because it was a status symbol.  I guess it has to do with trying to be accepted in those really tough middle school and high school years.  If you wore a "cheap" brand of clothing, you were running the risk of getting called out on it and being made fun of.  There were those kids who wore clothes that were kind of out there, but people kind of accepted it and didn't think any less of them...it was a tough thing to pull off.

The funny thing is that the first year of college, that all changed.  The $100 jeans and expensive purses were traded in for sweats and bookbags.  In one year, what was fashionable was turned on it's head.  I remember juniors and seniors in the college I attended would make fun of the girls who wore the "high school clothes", laughing at how they got dressed up for class.  You have to love it.

Even after that, there is more progression.  I've noticed that post college young adults changed their fashion as well.  The style went from expensive clothes from retail stores in high school, comfortable, versatile clothes in college...and now patterned or solid, clean looking clothes after college.  No longer was it cool to wear a tee with the brand plastered on the front of it, nor was it cool to wear my Victoria Secret PINK sweatpants.  It was almost like people tried to wear clothes that you didn't know what brand they were.  I could wear a pair of Roca Wear jeans and be more accepted that someone who wore jeans that were double the price with the brand all over them.

It is certainly funny how the fashion world works.

Knee High Socks

07.21.08 (8:56 am)   [edit]

I have kind of a strange affinity for knee high socks .  Playing soccer and softball for most of my life got me used to pulling my socks up to under my knees pretty quickly.  In those sports, they were functional as they covered shin guards and protected me when sliding.  Whenever I watch sports on TV, I always think that the basketball and baseball players who wear knee high socks are always the most professional looking.  I eventually carried this love for high socks over into fashion.

I remember a few years ago after watching the movie "Dazed And Confused" that I thought I'd give them a try off of the field.  The movie was based in the 1970s and the cheerleaders in the movie wore these great retro looking white socks with stripes on the top.  I loved the look of this and immediately ordered some Hue knee high socks.  I would wear them playing tennis or running, and everyone seemed to really like them.

It kind of proves that fashion is cyclical...what was cool in the 60s and 70s is cool again.  I can't go to the mall now without seeing girls wearing knit skirts and a cute fitting tee with Hue knee high socks and sneakers.  I can't complain about the return of a great fashion trend!

Telling Time

07.18.08 (8:51 am)   [edit]
I was out with my friends to get some lunch at Panera.  We were kind of in a hurry to eat and get to my friend's house because we had to do a project.  My good friend Sandy asked me what time it was, and I realized something oddly funny.  I reached for my Baby Phat phone and my other friend asked "why don't you just check your laptop?".  I had my Dell laptop open, and obviously it tells you the time and date in the lower left hand corner.  My iPod in my purse made three devices that I had on my person that told the time.  If that isn't odd enough, I looked down at my wrist and had my Baby Phat watch on my wrist.  Talk about excessive!  Anytime anyone needs to know the time, just ask me.  I should program each of them to different time zones so I have all my bases covered!

Wisdom Teeth

07.17.08 (8:24 am)   [edit]

So I got the bad news from my dentist a few weeks ago, I'm going to have to get my wisdom teeth out.  They've been hurting for a while now, but I absolutely hate going to the dentist.  I know I am going to hate going to the oral surgeon.  The problem is that my wisdom teeth are growing in wrong and are pushing on all of my teeth.  After all the money, time and pain I went through with braces in high school, I don't want it all to go to waste.

I'd be lying if I told you I wasn't a little worries.  I've had several friends get dry sockets, which I hear is unimaginably painful.  These can be due to many things:  eating too soon after the surgery, improper wound care or just plain bad luck.  All that I know is I'm scared, but ready.  I'm all stocked up with ice cream, freeze pops, soup, gauze and wound care products.  Lets just get this over with.  Wish me luck!

Comfies!

07.16.08 (1:22 pm)   [edit]

I came home at about 6 pm last night from a long day of work, exercising and running errands.  I realized something as I laid in my room listening to some music.  I love comfy clothes probably as much as I love anything in the entire world.

I take pride in my fashion sense, don't get me wrong.  I spend a lot of my money on clothes and accessories.  I just think that there's something to be said about slipping into a pair of comfy, fuzzy socks and some Hue sleepwear.  There is a time and a place for the skirts and heels, but I love the time reserves for Hue pajamas and sweatpants myself.

I think everyone should reserve at least 2 hours per day, besides sleeping, to wear clothes that they are totally comfortable in.  Everyone would be a whole lot happier!

Dresses

07.15.08 (12:54 pm)   [edit]

I think the dress is one of the most under-utilized fashion pieces in our collective closet.  It seems like lately, the dress has become replaced by tank tops and skirts.  While I do enjoy wearing skirts and tanks in warm weather, I don't think we should ignore our dresses.  I, for one, am a huge fan of sundresses in the summer.  I wear one at least once a week, probably more.  To me, a beautiful, fun, flirty sundress makes me feel sexy and feminine.

I just wore two Roca Wear dresses this past week.  I wore one to a graduation party on Thursday, and one to a cookout on Friday.  I received so many compliments on them from men and women alike.  I felt really great about myself, very confident and pretty.  I got more than one comment on how "classy" I looked, which was a surprise to me.  I always thought dresses were about being fun and young, but apparently they have class as well.  All in all, I think us girls should take advantage of these classic pieces of female clothing and give the skirts a little bit of a rest.

Colored denim

07.09.08 (11:06 am)   [edit]

I'm kind of undecided when it comes to the latest denim trend, colored denim. I've seen trendy, urban fashion companies like Roca Wear come out with these new, tight fitting, loud colored jeans.  Now I'm accustomed to blue jeans that have a light wash, medium wash and dark wash.  In addition to those, I've seen the black jeans, white jeans, and shades of gray.  These jeans are like nothing I've seen before.

On one hand, they look like they could be incredibly stylish and be the central point of many outfits.  A pair of bright red pants could make for some fun, interesting outfits for certain occasions.  The fit seems to go with the color as well, very tight all the way through the leg and ankle.

On the other hand, they're pretty risky.  They would be hard to pull off with some staple tops that you'd wear with regular blue jeans, which would make colored denim pretty much the opposite of your normal denim.

I think if I could find a pair or two of these at a reasonable price (under $40), I'd pick them up.  The nicest ones I've seen are pink jeans and green jeans.  I also have to get to the gym if I want to fit into them!

My Type Of Guy

06.26.08 (11:19 am)   [edit]

Nothing bothers me more than when people go out and buy whatever clothes are "trendy".  I think someone should be subtle yet classy about the way they dress and present themselves.  I don't think it's a good look when someone looks like a walking advertisement.  The guys, especially, around here walk around like Abercrombie or American Eagle pay them to wear their stuff.  It's not only the preppy ones that commit this sin...seemingly every guy is guilty of this sin.  I can separate 90% of guys into 5 categories.

Prep

Like I mentioned before, walking advertisements for stores like Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister and American Eagle.  These guys always wear  an Abercrombie & Fitch polo or button down with several layered Abercrombie tops.  A white, destroyed cap turned slightly sideways, stud earrings, a necklace, wristbands and a Lance Armstrong band will accessorize the look.  They always wear overpriced jeans or cargos when it is hot...and always flip flops...always.

Emo

My least favorite.  Girls jeans, long black hair, makeup, tight tee shirts, studded belts, big shoes.  Can't stand the look, can't stand the attitude.  It is very depressing to me seeing almost grown men wear this in public.

Jock

The guy who doesn't own one dress shirt or pair of slacks.  Everything he wears is a  tee shirt or shorts.  He owns several $100 jerseys of his favorite athletes, but can't buy one decend button down.  I have no problem with being comfortable, but try to look presentable.  Buy a pair of dress shoes for god sakes!

Bad Boy

The most tolerable of the group because they're good looking most of the time.  This guy usually has facial hair and hoop earrings.  Shaved or buzzed head, tattoos, bandanas, dark sunglasses all make appearances on this type of guy.  They ride motorcycles, smoke cigarettes and wear a lot of black.

Gangster

The oversized tee shirts, all the patterened clothes, the caps with the flat brim.  If you are a guy who works out, why would you want such loose fitting clothes?  You can't show off your physique under an 8x white tee.

Anyways, my point is that you could easily take something from each of these stereotypes to make your wardrobe more balances and less laughable.  Put on a pair of dark wash jeans with a lot of character and put a brown belt on them.  Wear a tee with a design you like on it (no brand names!) and a solid hat to match.  Tie this all together with a nice pair of casual shoes and a Roca Wear coat and you have a well balanced, classy look.

Bird Watching

06.25.08 (8:30 am)   [edit]

When 2 of my friends brought up the idea of a Smith Mountain Lake bird watch , I was more than a little skeptical.  My two friends Sarah and Brianne are more of the "hippie" type.  They are both vegans, members of PETA, animal lovers, organic food eaters.  Although that isn't my lifestyle, we are all friends anyways.  So they brought this idea up for a bird watch and I absolutely adore animals so I agreed to go.

We went down to Smith Mountain Lake VA with binoculars and a lunch in hand and I was excited to see what this was all about.  I figured there was a certain way to "bird watch", but my friends told me that there really wasn't.  "All you do is look at a bird through your binoculars and try to identify it" Brianne said, pointing to my little bird guide book in my hand.  I agreed and knew that I had a tough task ahead of me.  I love animals, but I am not too knowledgable about them.

We spent a few hours walking around, spotting several birds.  Most of them I wasn't able to recognize, but the girls would help me out.  All in all, I had a really good time.  It was nice spending time with Sarah and Brianne, doing something they enjoy and something new for me.  Would I go again?  Definitely.  I do have to brush up on my bird smarts though!

Thought Provoking Article

06.24.08 (11:56 am)   [edit]

I recently read an article on cracked.com illustrating the reasons why people are more miserable now than people were years ago. It was extremely interesting reading over some of the points.  It got me thinking how it is amazing that people today live in a world with so many technological advancements and comforts are still miserable. The article highlighted how people through the early and middle 1900s had more friends and meaningful relationships, resulting in a better quality of life.

The one reason that really stuck out of this article is the idea of negativity.  The world today is geared more towards hate and negativity.  Nobody wants to read how a certain band is alright or how good a certain dish is, they want to read the "10 worst" and "100 horrible".  Look through magazines like US Weekly and other magazine subscriptions as well as newspapers, television news and websites and you will find that there is a very negative tone to the news.

The comment in the article was "people are going to click on the story that says "Fall Out Boy is the worst band ever" before they click on the headline "Fall Out Boy is a decent band".  That was the gist of the comment, I forget exactly what it was.  I agree with this assessment...people want to hear dirt and juicy gossip.  Well I hope for all our sakes, things brigten up a little bit and we concentrate on more pleasant things in life.

Stealing!

06.23.08 (12:40 pm)   [edit]

Myself and a friend were at the mall the other day just looking around, doing a little shopping.  We sat down in the food court for a bite to eat...got some delicious Chinese food.  After we were done, we took our trays to the garbage and when we came back, her Baby Phat handbag was gone!  We looked under the chairs and tables and couldn't find it.  We asked around and nobody saw anything...ugh.

My biggest pet peeve in the world is when people steal.  I understand the whole philosophy behind it, I know why people do it.  Not paying for something is a lot better than paying for something.  I just think that stealing is the most basic lack of consideration someone could have.  My friend obviously worked to make the money for that purse, and earned it in a sense.  The guy or girl who took it did not.  I, personally, wouldn't steal anything from anyone.

Anyway, there isn't too much we can do about it.  We filed a report with the security and police at the mall and they said they'll call us if anything turns up.  We learned a valuable lesson...not to take our eyes off of our belongings for one second.

Celebrity Clothing Lines

06.20.08 (8:21 am)   [edit]

In our society, the rich keep getting richer.  Big time movie stars and singers are crossing over into other projects very naturally these days.  Artists like Alicia Keys, Jennifer Lopez, Ice T, Ice Cube, Justin Timberlake  and Beyonce Knowles all have successful acting careers.  In addition, actors and actresses like Paris Hilton, Miley Cyrus and Hilary Duff have budding musical careers.  If the transition between movies and music wasn't enough, it seems like every celeb wants to get their hand in the fashion cookie jar.

There are almost too many celebrity fashion lines to name.  Some, like Jay Z's Roca Wear clothing are insanely popular and reputable.  In addition, celebrities like Russell and Kimora Lee Simmons, Jennifer Lopez, Puff Daddy, Michael Jordan and Nelly all have clothes branded in their name.  With some celebs involved in a combination of fashion, music, movies and athletics, its no wonder that these young stars are some of the wealthiest people in the country.

Family Vacation

06.19.08 (10:58 am)   [edit]
Myself and the family have been discussing our summer vacation plans a lot lately.  We usually go at the end of August for 7 to 10 days.  There are the standard vacation spots like Smith Mountain Lake , Virginia Beach, Washington DC and Baltimore.  A few of us would like to change it up a little bit this year though.  I haven't been up north in a while and would like to see Philadelphia, Boston or New York City.  I'm probably the only person on Earth that wants to go north in the summer, but I like to keep it fresh.  Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore going to Smith Mountain Lake VA , but I like to expand my horizons a bit.  A couple nights in the big city seems like something that would be really exciting.  The hard part is going to be selling the idea to my parents!

Pop Culture Society

I was reading through US Weekly magazine and saw an article on Jamie Lynn Spears that prompted some thoughts on our "pop culture society".  I personally think it is a shame the way some of these young celebrities act.  These girls are getting arrested and constantly putting a bad foot forward in the public eye.  Now I don't really care what happens to them, as far as I'm concerned they reap what they sow.  If these girls like the Spears sisters, Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton want to be so reckless with their lives, then let them suffer the punishment.

The only real issue I have with it is younger, impressionable girls look at this behavior and think it's acceptable.  I wouldn't want my daughter to think that its OK to drive under the influence or not wear underwear under skirts.  I know movie stars and singers don't perfect their craft to become role models, they do it to become famous and financially stable.  Still, that shouldn't omit their actions...they know teenage girls are going to replicate them.

I don't want to come off sounding like an old lady, I just wish that these celebrities would be a little more responsible for everyone's sake.  I don't want to see them pregnant, addicted or in prison....and I also don't want to see their fans in the same situation.
